This position reports to: Head of Design – Electrical.

Main Purpose:

Design integrated electronics for new CBI products, such as enhanced circuit breakers, energy meters, remote monitoring and IoT connected products.

Main Responsibilities

  • The Design Engineering department is responsible for innovation, design, simulations, specifying bill of materials, rapid prototyping, firmware integration and documentation of assemblies or systems for use in:
  • Products for electrical protection and energy metering.
  • Automated test equipment to support CBI’s mass manufacturing processes.

The individual’s role in the department is flexible, such that responsibilities and remuneration will scale with the level of experience, skills and career goals of the applicant.

  • Liaise with internal and external role players (e.g. Quality Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Process Engineering, Software Engineering, Project Management, Certification, Tool Design, Procurement, Suppliers, Sales, Export) to support innovation, design and manufacturing.
  • May be required to occasionally travel to customers, suppliers or CBI’s other sites.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum BSc (Eng.) / BEng degree in Electronics.
  • 3-10 years design experience in
    1. Electronic design, PCB layout and prototyping
    2. Writing software / embedded firmware

Advantageous

  • Relevant Master’s Degree or other relevant qualifications
  • Knowledge of IoT networking, system integration and other software

Competencies

  • Good communication skills
  • Self-motivated, working unsupervised or remotely
  • Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary design team
  • Taking ownership of projects and execute from problem identification to implementation

JOB PURPOSE:

We are seeking a strategic leader to guide a team of design engineers and technical professionals, overseeing both product and system design. The successful candidate will drive innovation through R&D initiatives and ensure the successful execution of projects. This role demands a focus on implementing growth strategies to strengthen departmental capabilities and align with the broader organizational goals.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Design Engineering:

  • Product Development & Strategy – Oversee design, feasibility studies, and alignment with the global strategy.
  • Collaboration & Process Optimization – Support cross-functional teams, process improvements, and capital projects.
  • Compliance & Innovation – Maintain documentation, ensure regulatory compliance, and track industry advancements.

 

Research and Development (R&D):

  • Collaborate with R&D teams to foster innovation and explore new technologies.
  • Execute R&D initiatives to enhance product development and manufacturing.

Compliance:

  • Ensure designs align with manufacturing capabilities for efficiency and cost reduction.
  • Maintain compliance with international standards and ISO 9001 quality management standards.

Financial Management:

  • Prepare and manage departmental budgets, controlling costs while optimizing resources.
  • Oversee project costs and identify cost-saving initiatives.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Communicate project progress and R&D updates to stakeholders.
  • Act as a bridge between departments to ensure project alignment and timely execution.

Leadership and People Management:

  • Lead and mentor engineering personnel, promoting innovation and professional development.
  • Foster a collaborative, continuous improvement-driven culture.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering practices, safety standards, and documentation of technical knowledge.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • A Postgraduate qualification in Business or related fields is a plus.
  • Minimum of 10 years in an engineering management role and 20 years in the industry.
  • Proven track record in managing engineering design teams and overseeing product life cycles.
  • Experience in ISO 9001 environments, budgeting, and cost control.

Person Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and focus on innovation and process improvement.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure.
  • Financial acumen and experience in departmental budget management.

TOOLMAKER

Minimum Requirements

TOOLMAKER

Purpose:
The purpose of this role is to maintain, repair, and manufacture press tooling and moulding tools to meet production needs.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely delivery and adherence to set schedules for tooling projects.
  • Manufacture all equipment and gauges according to technical drawings and specifications.
  • Maintain and service decentralized operations machinery.
  • Assist the production department with machine and equipment maintenance.
  • Ensure all parts meet established quality standards and are manufactured with precision.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations in the workshop.
  • Carry out work efficiently, ensuring high-quality output and meeting deadlines.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Matric/Senior Certificate or NQF 4 equivalent qualification.
  • Qualified Toolmaker with a Trade Test.
  • At least 10 years of post-apprenticeship experience in a toolroom environment, including the maintenance, repair, and manufacturing of precision tools.
  • Experience with pneumatic systems and PLCs.
  • CNC Milling experience.
  • Proficiency in CADKEY and EDGECAM software.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Solid manufacturing experience.
  • Ability to work shifts as required.

  • Mentorship to apprentices
