DESIGN ENGINEERING - ELANDSFONTEIN

 

This position reports to: Head of Design – Electrical.

Main Purpose:

Design integrated electronics for new CBI products, such as enhanced circuit breakers, energy meters, remote monitoring and IoT connected products.

Main Responsibilities

  • The Design Engineering department is responsible for innovation, design, simulations, specifying bill of materials, rapid prototyping, firmware integration and documentation of assemblies or systems for use in:
  • Products for electrical protection and energy metering.
  • Automated test equipment to support CBI’s mass manufacturing processes.

The individual’s role in the department is flexible, such that responsibilities and remuneration will scale with the level of experience, skills and career goals of the applicant.

  • Liaise with internal and external role players (e.g. Quality Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Process Engineering, Software Engineering, Project Management, Certification, Tool Design, Procurement, Suppliers, Sales, Export) to support innovation, design and manufacturing.
  • May be required to occasionally travel to customers, suppliers or CBI’s other sites.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum BSc (Eng.) / BEng degree in Electronics.
  • 3-10 years design experience in
    1. Electronic design, PCB layout and prototyping
    2. Writing software / embedded firmware

Advantageous

  • Relevant Master’s Degree or other relevant qualifications
  • Knowledge of IoT networking, system integration and other software

Competencies

  • Good communication skills
  • Self-motivated, working unsupervised or remotely
  • Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary design team
  • Taking ownership of projects and execute from problem identification to implementation

  • Analyse existing workflows to identify and implement automation opportunities that enhance efficiency and reduce manual input.
  • Evaluate and select equipment based on performance, reliability, cost, and system compatibility.
  • Develop and integrate hardware, software, and firmware solutions to support automation initiatives.
  • Design, build, and test prototypes for automated processes; gather performance data, analyse results, and refine solutions.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues in automation systems; perform routine maintenance, calibration, and implement corrective actions as needed.

TOOLMAKER

Purpose:
The purpose of this role is to maintain, repair, and manufacture press tooling and moulding tools to meet production needs.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely delivery and adherence to set schedules for tooling projects.
  • Manufacture all equipment and gauges according to technical drawings and specifications.
  • Maintain and service decentralized operations machinery.
  • Assist the production department with machine and equipment maintenance.
  • Ensure all parts meet established quality standards and are manufactured with precision.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations in the workshop.
  • Carry out work efficiently, ensuring high-quality output and meeting deadlines.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Matric/Senior Certificate or NQF 4 equivalent qualification.
  • Qualified Toolmaker with a Trade Test.
  • At least 10 years of post-apprenticeship experience in a toolroom environment, including the maintenance, repair, and manufacturing of precision tools.
  • Experience with pneumatic systems and PLCs.
  • CNC Milling experience.
  • Proficiency in CADKEY and EDGECAM software.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Solid manufacturing experience.
  • Ability to work shifts as required.
