A new wiring programme, covering SANS1042 wiring code and practical training, for engineering undergraduates at Pretoria University will benefit from a recent sponsorship by Circuit Breaker Industries (CBI).
Most graduating engineers leave university with little practical knowledge of wiring premises . To help remedy the situation, Pretoria University introduced a practical course in the wiring of domestic homes as part of the electrical engineering degree. On graduation, the students receive a diploma, which together with their degree qualifies them to become registered wiremen. At a function held at the University of Pretoria, CBI presented a certificate commemorating their sponsorship of distribution boards, circuit breakers and textbooks for use in the programme The text book in question is the comprehensive ‘Application Guide for the Protection of L.V. Distribution Systems’, an in-house publication that calls on the vast experience gained by CBI over five decades in the application of electrical protection equipment. According to Karen Heitmuller, CBI’s marketing manager, this sponsorship forms part of an ongoing programme of support for tertiary education institutions, which is aimed at helping widen the pool of qualified engineers and technicians and strengthening the links between academia and industry.
